Tulane University Strategic Master Plan
for Uptown Campus

Strategic facility plan supports renewal on a campus changed by Hurricane Katrina

Tulane University was knocked out of business when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, forcing a temporary closure of the university. Tulane rebounded quickly, opening its doors a mere four months after the storm, but the changed landscape required that a new organizational structure be put in place. Tulane's board outlined a Plan for Renewal and enlisted Christner's experts in strategic facility planning to align existing facility resources with the goals of the renewal plan. Christner's strategic facility plan addressed the immediate need for administrative reorganization and a response to lower projected enrollment. Recommendations included: creating a new identity and home for the Undergraduate College, using vacated space to consolidate dispersed departments and strengthen academic zones on campus, thematically grouping previously-dispersed student-centered services, and enhancing the core campus quadrangle with landscape improvements.
