St. John's Mercy Children's Hospital, Phase 1

Including families in patient care

Creating a distinctive Children's Hospital in the midst of the medical center campus required extraordinary vision. Christner's planners captured new and renovated space and forged adjacencies vertically and horizontally, consolidating pediatric services and surgery in the Children's Hospital, supported by the nearby pediatric emergency department. All patient rooms (pediatric, PICU and NICU) are private. We distributed nursing stations around pods of six rooms, allowing nurses to be closer to the bedside. Each room has a designated family area with sleeper sofa, so that families are included in caring for their child.
