With the goal of increasing patient and physician satisfaction, St. John’s decided to expand its OR capacity in a new ambulatory center. With eight new OR’s on the ground floor, an imaging center on the second floor, and doctors’ offices above, measurable efficiencies are realized. Surgeons report great satisfaction with the limited access elevator that allows them to “pop up” to the office to see a patient in the brief time between cases.
Practice specialties support four OR’s for orthopedics, two for ophthalmology, and two for general surgery. Performance outcomes have been positive: a significant increase in case volumes for the surgery center; a new culture of productivity; exceptional patient satisfaction scores; and renewed physician loyalty to a clinical strategy on the main hospital campus.
Size: 250,000 sf
Status: Completed 2004
Architects worked closely with user groups to design the Surgery Center, which includes a 25,000 sf ambulatory center on the first floor.
The Surgery Center’s 2-story atrium provides a warm and inviting meeting place for patients, family and staff. The open space and natural light create a healing environment for patients.
