Following a planning process in 2002, Christner designed a new 102,400 sf four-story Patient Care Wing for this urban pediatric hospital and teaching hospital. The wing provides 48 private, acute care, medical/surgery beds and two floors of outpatient clinics. Christner’s design addressed the goals of eliminating all semiprivate patient rooms; making Emergency and ambulatory clinic services a positive experience—fast and efficient; and creating sufficient, well-located parking.

The new emergency entrance provides convenient access in a calm setting shielded from street traffic and noise by the building. Large canopies provide shade and shelter and are instantly recognizable as destinations.
The patient tower project resulted from a master planning process that identified a significant space shortfall and the need for private rooms.
A playful rotunda uses a unique floor pattern and changing LED-lighting to appeal to children.
Lounges and public spaces offer a variety of play areas for children of different ages and degrees of health, while accommodating the needs of parents and siblings as well.
Patient rooms are large enough for several family members to visit, with full sleeper-sofas, and counter space for working parents.
A playroom at the sunny end of the building allows children to leave their hospital rooms and enjoy being a kid.
This trauma room is in the expanded emergency department which reclaimed needed resources by allowing a more efficient staffing model.
Warner’s Corner is a unique area that incorporates sports memorabilia, tv screens, comfortable seating, and cafe tables to provide a respite for teenage patients. Vibrant colors contrast with the calmer hospital environment.
Six distinct areas in Warner’s Corner allow up to twenty children to watch movies, get on the internet, write on the wall, play board games, or simply hang out.
