Mercy Children's Hospital, Phase 1 Renovation

Including families in patient care

The desire to consolidate NICU and Pediatric inpatient services into a new Children's Hospital was a key driver of the master facility plan. In the first phase, we renovated 54,000 sf on two floors to accommodate all private patient rooms. On the NICU floor, we situated nurse stations so that each patient bassinet is in the sight line of a caregiver. On the pediatric floor, we distributed nursing stations around pods of six rooms, allowing nurses to be closer to the bedside. Each room has a designated family area with sleeper sofa, so that families are included in caring for their child.
